i3 Solutions Group Appointed as Principal Consultants to Lead Kao Data Slough, UK Facility Design

i3 Solutions Group has announced the company has been appointed Principal Consultant by Kao Data, to lead design engineering work at its 16MW, carrier-neutral data centre in Slough, West London.

Founder and Chairman of i3 Solutions Group, Ed Ansett said, “We’re naturally delighted to have been appointed for this project by Kao Data – a company which, like i3, takes very seriously the need for greater sustainability throughout the data centre lifecycle. This can be seen in both the cooling design and the use of HVO to fuel stand-by power generation at the Harlow Campus. We believe that our shared values will make this a successful partnership.”

Gérard Thibault, Chief Technical Officer at Kao Data, said, “As a developer and operator of high-performance data centres for advanced computing, from inception, Kao Data has set out to provide customers with hyperscale-inspired digital infrastructure. Working with i3 Solutions Group is a meeting of like minds; our values, as well as our design and engineering ethos, are all well aligned. We look forward to working together to scale our sustainable infrastructure platform to serve cloud, enterprise and intensive computing requirements.”

Situated in the West London Availability Zone within the world’s second-largest data centre hub, the new Kao Data Slough facility will bring to market up to 16MW of Tier 3 equivalent resilient space for mission-critical IT equipment. The new capacity will conform to Kao Data’s established high-performance design and sustainability principles, delivering energy-efficient operations with an SLA-backed PUE <1.2, even at partial loads. Other sustainability features of the facility include a 100% renewable energy supply, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to fuel its backup power generators, and an ultra-efficient cooling system.

i3 Solutions Group designs facilities to meet clients’ sustainability goals, provide long-term flexibility to accommodate evolving IT and end-user requirements, and deliver a low first cost. Acting as lead consultant in a multidisciplinary capacity, the company supports clients throughout the design process from initial concepts to detailed co-ordinated data centre design projects, routinely using REVIT/ BIM modelling, reliability modelling and computational fluid dynamics to scientifically establish performance and the effects of change upon the infrastructure design and IT load. i3 Solutions Group has a global reputation for future thinking and innovation in data centre design.

Its innovations and IP, including Adaptable Redundant Power (ARP) and the High-Rise Green Data Centre, demonstrate its thought-leadership and commitment to moving the industry forward. In 2021, i3 Solutions established the GHG Abatement Group together with its US partners, EYP MCF, part of Ramboll, to offer thought leadership on the subject of data centre sustainability, including a route map to achieving net-zero carbon data centre operations.

To date, the GHG Abatement Group has published six original white papers providing engineering insights into enhancing the efficiency of data centres and reducing their carbon emissions from fossil-fuelled energy supplies. The latest publication covers Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and data centres and is available for free download from the i3 Solutions website.
